History
"To remain ignorant of things that happened before you were born is to remain a child. What is a human life worth unless it is incorporated into the lives of our ancestors and set in a historical
context." Cicero (106-43 B.C.)
Every time I witness the audiences that Obama seems to draw on, I can see in their eyes the
absence of any historical understanding as to what our country has stood for in the past and, I
hope, in some measure, still stands for today. However, I am afraid that in this matter, my
hopes are probably just wishful thinking.
For a man who only recently came into the light of day, relatively to his political life, I cannot
help wondering what is it that the youth of this nation see in this man. We know he has only a
minimal amount of experience in the World of Politics and less in knowledge of what makes the
world go around. He takes a stand that most problems can be solved, if only we talk to our
adversaries. This is very touching but also shows a lack of knowledge as to what has gone on before.
The libraries are stacked with famous speeches, discussions between or with those that would
do a nation or nations harm. Talk is cheap. For this reason, you usually get out of it, what it
is worth. There have been Wars and rumores of war, throughout the lives of all mankind. Seldomhave these conflicts been solved by talk. I would like Mr Obama, to justify his contentions with facts. Yes, there may be some, but apparently worthy of little note, either that or history has been left almost void of such happenings.
In my opinion, I feel that the majority of students of today, have been given little or no historical
knowledge, in our present day schools. Yes the African Americans, get to learn about their
history during Black History month. The reason I do not mention African-American History
is that I firmly believe that within this history, both sides of the story is not being told.
Our children of this great Nation have been deprived of knowing their countries history, while
we have gone out of our way to provide within the black populations, at least some degree of their historical past. Why is this. Why is a nation that has accomplished
so much in relatively speaking a short time, denying to all its children a knowledge of our nations past. It it any wonder that a man, the likes of Obama would appear to them, wise and knowledgeable, just because he talks good.
"Two often American educators are like the Wizard of OZ, handing out substitutes for brains,
bravery and heart." Thomas Sowall - Inside American Education, 1993.
